Compassion, loving-kindness, joy and equanimity are the qualities of the awakened heart, and can be cultivated through the timeless practices of meditation and contemplation.
In Buddhism, these qualities are known as the Four Immeasurables or Brahmaviharas which translates as the “abodes of the gods.” In the garden of every heart, these energies live like seeds and with care, intention and meditation, can grow and flourish so that the heart becomes a fertile, welcoming, and radiant space that nourishes everyone who comes near.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama said that compassion for those near and dear to us comes naturally, but to have universal compassion, mind training is necessary. And only universal compassion can stir us to solve and resolve the issues that we face in our world today. We will learn and practice mind-training and heart-opening techniques from both Buddhism and Christian mysticism.
