Faces of Compassion

A couple months ago in LA, I heard my son and his friends talking about the changes they’ve noticed since they took up a gratitude practice — the one where every day you write down ten things you are grateful for. I felt happy for them even as this thought flitted by, “Oh yes, did that years ago. My practice is more sophisticated now.”  Yeah, right! In fact, the gratitude muscle is like every other muscle … only regular exercise keeps it strong. And now seems like a great time to give it a workout.   So, today I’m grateful for: My much cleaner closets, […]

Collecting Smiles

Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.”  Mother Theresa It’s September 1970 and I’m at an all-day rock festival. In between bands they are blasting the music of Jimi Hendrix because we’d just lost him.  A few hours earlier, as I walked out the door, my dad had looked up from his paper long enough to roll his eyes. You see, I am wearing a sheet. Well, it would never function as a sheet again, as I’d cut a hole in the middle for my head, painted flowers on it […]

Gifts of Love and Praise

Last Sunday I drove away from the Unity Church of Merritt Island in total bliss. Why? Because I had spent the whole morning being present to the thanks and praise of my dear friend, Rev. Rose Whitham (who also, by the way, married Mike and me). It was her last service and her retirement ceremony from thirteen years as the minister of that church and, interspersed with wonderful music, there was time for sharing. Person after person got up — many in tears — to say how much she had touched them, inspired them, and changed their lives. So many personal stories of healing and transformation and, simply, love. Love for my friend and […]

What Feeds You

I’m sitting at the dining room table with laptop before me and books strewn around me. Today the crowd that’s gathered includes: Santideva’s Guide to the Buddhist Path of Awakening (8th century CE), The Mindful Therapist (I love Dan Siegel!), Krista Tippett’s Becoming Wise, and Brene Brown’s Braving the Wilderness. Also, Rilke is keeping me company and sharing thoughts On Love and Other Difficulties, and other mystics as well in The Enlightened Heart: An Anthology of Sacred Poetry (gift from an old lover and one of the most pored over). Tree of Life: Buddhism and Protection of Nature, Shift into Freedom, by Loch Kelly, a Sierra club magazine, and three journals are here too. Every book […]

When I Become a Dog Person
I call my friend Rosanne because I am overwhelmed, so much more than sad, at the latest eruption of violence. She tells me today is the Chinese New Year, the beginning of the year of the EarthDog. She reads to me what that portends—last year it was Fire Rooster igniting us to rise up and act, and this year the EarthDog energy will ground us and help us align with deeper values, with universal love, respect, awareness of the Sacred. I am comforted by her words. I choose to be. Then I remember. “Oh my, this morning I had this […]

The Hands You Trust Completely

I am lying on the massage table as my friend Tracey draws a deep line on my calf from ankle to almost-knee. With the invisible ink of healing energy, she draws the line again and again, pausing at certain points so that ripples are released from the spot and travel up through my limb, torso, and then out the top of my head. So that ripples move up and then out into the room through my skin, my fingertips. It is joyful. “Can you feel that?” I ask her. The whole room is swimming in the energy that was once […]

Path of Forgiveness, Power of Ceremony

The Heart is the Space where there is no judgment … the Heart carries no pain from the past and no fear of the future.  The Heart – where the light of Spirit comes into the body – is always whole, free, and filled with gratitude for each moment.  Forgiveness is a way of finding this innermost Heart and releasing whatever blocks our awareness of its light and love and joy.  Forgiveness is a way of remembering who we really are  …  and in that remembrance we find each other. It’s a Saturday afternoon,  and we sit around a long table […]

The Heart’s Pure Instinct

COMPASSION … We had just checked our bags at the airport when I see about a dozen guys in tan khakis. We get closer and I read the words Emergency Medical on their shoulder badges. I ask where they’re heading. Puerto Rico. We’re replacing a team that’s been there a while.  He seems glad to be going. I say, Good luck . . . and thank you. Meanwhile, we are leaving Atlanta after three days of good food and conversation, happy strolls under tall trees and a gentle October sun, and much laughter. After hide ’n seek, tricycle races and […]

Insights on Love from the Women’s March

“in order to form a more perfect union . . .” The United States of America is an idea, a beautiful idea, a vision of what could be. It’s the idea of a group of people bound together, not by tribe or religion, not by birthplace or clan or color of skin, but by a belief in certain truths. Such as, the truth of equality (in our beingness, no one is better than anyone else). And the truth of innate deservability (everyone deserves the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness). These truths have been percolating for centuries […]
